WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHERE YOUR WOOD COMES FROM

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHERE YOUR WOOD COMES FROM

In recent years we’ve all become more conscious and concerned about where the food and drink we consume comes from, but what about looking at where other important items in our life come from?

In recent years we’ve all become more conscious and concerned about where the food and drink we consume comes from, but what about looking at where other important items in our life come from?

As you’d expect, the source of the timber we use is of great importance to us. We believe that we have an obligation to our customers to put as much effort in the sourcing our wood, as we do in the crafting of it.

At RAW Materials Inc. we purchase timber at a range of different stages, direct from estates or forests, local timber mills and also timber traders. Because of the way we do business using super local timbers, including the usual suspects as Oak & Ash, but also some less familiars or favourable species, including some amazing ‘soft woods’ we are very much in touch and alive to our supply chain.

There are several certification schemes that can aid this transparent supply chain, but we also go a step further in sourcing our own timber from the land which surrounds us on the South Downs. What could be more sustainable that well managed forests, on your doorstep, whether it be coppice stock like hazel, or a beautiful old oak, which has been upended.

I had a conversation with a lady a few weeks ago with a someone in our showroom it went a bit like this.

Customer – So do you use reclaimed/recycled materials?

Me – No we use local sustainable timbers, from well managed forests or timber which has fallen in winds etc.

Customer – That’s not sustainable the. If you don’t use recycled materials.

…you get the idea.

Now, I have no issue with the people of businesses who use reclaimed materials (in fact we often work in collaboration with Brighton wood recycling project) but it’s a misconception of what is and isn’t, sustainable – like timber or materials bought from all over the world shipped over to the UK.

So, my message is, don’t confuse reclaimed or recycled with sustainability, particularly if the timber is shipped-in from far flung Lands.
